The General Manager, Lagos State Public Works Corporation Engineer Olufemi Daramola has assured Lagosians that despite consistent rain, the agency has not relented in carrying out its mandate of road rehabilitation and patching of potholes.

Daramola explained that palliative measures are being deployed across Lagos roads where there were noticeable potholes created with the onset of the raining season as the agency would return to full repair of the roads during the dry season.

“This we have done continuously everyday in the last one year in line with the vision of the Governor to ensure Zero Tolerance for Potholes on Lagos Roads,”he said.

The GM LSPWC said that between the onset of the dry season in November 2019 and the approach of the wet season by May 2020, the agency rehabilitated over 260 roads across the state which involved major and sectional rehabilitation and palliative maintenance as determined by the peculiarity of each road that was repaired during the period.

Quantity and effect
He acknowledged the fact that there were still exist some bad roads in Lagos State but the quantity and effect cannot be compared to what obtained in May 2019 when the Administration of Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu was inaugurated.

“We have reduced potholes and bad road deficit, but the Covid-19 pandemic slowed down our speed to take full advantage of the dry season as we had to reduce number of gangs and other physical contact element in our operation during the total lockdown’’.

“Roads completed during the lockdown to include Acme Crescent, Kasumu Aleshinloye Street by Agidingbi and a section of Oregun Road inward Ikosi. Roads fixed at Alimosho Local Government includes Baruwa Road, sections of Aderele, Duduyemi Street and Okesalu Street inward Ikotun.

LSPWC equally intervened at Surulere Local Government where the agency concluded the rehabilitation Ogundare and sections of Nuru Oniwo street. Ikorordu Club road, Gbasemo Street, Fatimo Bintu Solebo and Mabadeje streets were fixed at Ikorodu area during the lockdown.

Other major roads that received attention during this period includes Herbert Macaulay Way by Yaba College of Technology, a section of the Ramp down at  Osborne inward Onikan and the bad section of the Third Axial  Road inward Iyana Oworo,” he said.

Daramola admitted that the need to fully comply with the Covid-19 protocol especially in the months of April and May reduced the agency’s speed of road fixing as planned earlier in the year.

Granite boulders
He further revealed that with the raining season at its peak, the agency would continue to intervene at critical roads with granite boulders and interlocking paving stone to repair potholes, reduce traffic and road discomfort on major roads and intersections.

Third Mainland bridge
While speaking on the efforts of LSPWC to ensure motorists are less affected by the planned rehabilitation work on segments of Third Mainland Bridge, he assured road users that rehabilitation of alternative roads will be sustained to ameliorate inconveniences that might arise from the closure of the bridge.

He said: “Already we have commenced rehabilitation of alternative routes at Otto Iddo by Underpass, sections of Apapa Road, Constain Roundabout, Oyingbo, Funsho Williams Avenue and  Herbert Macaulay Way on Lagos Mainland’’.

“The Lagos State Public Works Corporation in order to ensure durability of the roads, reduced incessant flooding and prevent further road damage has also intensified desalting of blocked drainages across Lagos metropolis. Major locations where LSPWC is clearing the drains of refuse, plastics and other unwanted materials to allow for free flow of flood water includes Mile 2, Ogba Road, Ijaiye Road, Shyllon, CMD Junction, Shasha Road, Iyalode Salami, Akilo and Amoo Streets.”
