The Lagos State Amateur Athletics Association has agreed to partner with the organizers of the Lagos Beach Marathon race which holds on October 1st 2014 at the Elegushi private beach, Victoria Island.
The agreement, which was reached during the week involves the marking of the race course and the selection of technical officials.
In an interactive session with the Beach Marathon race organizers, Lagos State Athletics Association Technical Director, Tony Osheku, promised to ensure that proper percussions for technically legal marathon race were strictly adhered to.
“As the state association is concerned, if anything goes wrong, the AFN and IAAF would like to know why. And I can’t be here and things go wrong, my expertise would be queried. “We have to look into certain technical and medical areas to ensure everything is right for a marathon to take place,” Osheku said.
The Beach Marathon organisers led by Phillips Obuesi had sought clarifications from the association on technical requirements and pleaded for assistance where necessary during the race.
However, at this year’s event, male and female youth will have the opportunity for a test of wits, strength and character in a long distance race along the beach-line, as over 400 runners have identified with the competition by picking forms at different locations in Lagos especially, at the National stadium Surulere.
The prize money for top finisher is N100.000.00, second placed athlete will pocket N50.000, while the third prizewinner will go home with N25.000.00. There will be other consolation prizes.
The objectives include raising awareness on issues of cervical cancer in Nigeria and to celebrate Nigeria’s independence.
