The Countdown For The 2019 Ake Book & Arts Festival Has Begun

Now in its 7th year, Ake Arts and Book Festival has brought over 400 artists, writers, poets, musicians, dancers and thnkers together in Abeokuta and now in Lagos State, Nigeria.

The primary goals of the festival are to promote, develop and celebrate creativity on the African continent through a series of events during the festival. These include panel discussions, workshops, bookchats, plays, poetry events, concerts and performances.

The festival also boasts a fantastic bookstore which stocks books primarily  by Africans, and books about Africa.

Organised by the Book Buzz Foundation, Ake Festival is four days of cultural immersion.

This year, the theme this year, ‘Black Bodies, Grey Matter‘ centers the African narrative, asking us interrogate who decides what the authentic African experience is.

The 2019 Ake Arts and Book Festival will explore the nexus between the mental and the physical, and explore specific phenomena such as scarification, body image, tattoos, stereotyping, gender nonconformity, colorism, and issues around mental health within an African context.
