Nestled in the heart of the French Polynesia is an island named Bora Bora. An oasis largely characterised by lush green volcanic mountains, sandy white beaches and iconic overwater bungalows.
Undoubtedly the most celebrated island in the French Polynesia, the name Bora Bora means “First Born” and the island which was first discovered in 1722 is said to be 7 million years old.
Bora Bora is a 12 square mile island in the Pacific Ocean part of Papeete, French Polynesia surrounded by a barrier reef and lagoon. The island’s population is about 8,800 and the major languages spoken there are French and Tahitian.

The Lagoonarium is an outdoor aquarium that offers a close-up interaction with different marine species. At the lagoonarium you get the chance to see sharks (Yeah, I hope you don’t chicken out) and other sea animals that you won’t be able to see while snorkeling in open waters.
Swimming with sea turtles: The Le Meridian has a unique care centre for turtles where you can gaze upon the beautiful creatures and even swim with them if you choose to.
Attend the “Heiva I Bora BorA”: If your trip happens to be in the month of July, do make sure to attend the “Heiva I Bora Bora” which is French Polynesia’s premier’s festival. The festival features a lot of colours, music, sport contests, dancing and beauty pageants and it is usually held in Vaitape on a big stage near the quay. In fact, you could even time your trip around it.

The island of Bora Bora is a dream destination any time of the year, but if you’re someone who prefers less rain and humidity then it might be best to visit during the peak season of winter, from June to August. The summer season of Bora Bora is a lot more tropical. There are plenty of rain showers and humidity, but the sun is always around with temperatures that average about 30°C. This period is also when you find the most budget-friendly deals so, for cheap flights to Bora Bora consider visiting between December and February, during the wet season.
